DIFFERENT MACHINES USED
Here is a list of the equipment used to lay down asphalt pavements such as:
• Reclaimer
A reclaimer, also known as a stabilizer, is a vehicle that has a large rotor blade that can be used to cut and pulverize the old pavement. It can also be used to mix lime, fly ash or cement into the subbase to stabilize poor soil.
• Milling Machines
The top layer of the existing pavement is milled off to provide a relatively smooth surface on which to pave. Milling produces a rough, grooved surface that helps increase the existing pavement’s surface area. Milling machines can be fitted with automatic grade control to restore longitudinal and transverse grade. They can remove most of the existing pavement distortions. Milling provides a highly skid resistant surface, which is suitable for temporary use by traffic. It also allows curbs and gutter lines to be maintained before asphalt mixture overlays.
• Graders
These can be used in place of milling machines if the base course is made up of dirt or gravel. Graders have large blades that are used to create a wide flat surface for the asphalt to be placed upon.
• Sweeper
It is essential to clean the road after milling as small rocks and pebbles can fly up and hit windshields of approaching vehicles. Too much dust and debris can prevent the proper bonding of asphalt and the base course. It can also result in a non-uniform compaction of asphalt. A sweeper is used to clean the surface of the road after it has been milled.
• Dump Trucks
These trucks are used to transfer hot asphalt from the plant to the jobsite. There are several different kinds of dump trucks, including: bottom dump trucks (unload their payload by opening gates on the bottom of the bed), end dump trucks (unload their payload by raising the front end) and live bottom (have a conveyor system at the bottom of their bed to unload their payload).
• Asphalt Pavers
These are a type of self-propelled formless laydown machines with a floating screed. The asphalt mixture is loaded in the front and carried to the rear using a set of flight feeders. It is spread out by a set of augers and leveled by a screed.
• Compactors
The paver screed, steel wheeled roller and pneumatic tire roller are used to compact asphalt. Weight is applied to the asphalt surface to compress the material under the ground. Lower equipment speed is used to produce more compression by increasing the periods of contact. Heavier equipment can also be used to increase compression.
• Material Transfer Vehicles
MTVs are used to assist the paver in accepting the asphalt mixture. Most of the pavers are equipped to receive the asphalt mixture directly from the end dump or live bottom trucks but it is better to use the MTV in certain conditions. MTVs offer several advantages such as additional surge volume, reduced truck waiting time, minimized aggregate segregation and lower temperature differentials.
